chemist wins kudos

Mario PintoChemistry chair and professor Mario Pinto's pioneering work in medicinal chemistry and drug design earned him the 2002 Bernard Belleau Award from the Canadian Society for Chemistry. The award is given annually to a scientist residing in Canada who has made a distinguished contribution to the field of medicinal chemistry through biochemical or organic chemical research.

Pinto's research into molecular topographies and molecular interactions protein receptors such as enzymes and antibodies has resulted in promising drug candidates that could guide drug and vaccine development for the treatment of diabetes, spreading cancers, Alzheimer's disease and Group A Streptococcus bacterium.

Pinto's work has been recognized in Canada, the US and abroad. He is a frequent speaker at international meetings and was the 2000-2001 Apotex lecturer at the University of Toronto.
