Research

costing kyoto

Bryn Sadowik (left), Mark Jaccard (centre), John Nyboer (right)A book that examines the cost of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Canada has won the Policy Research Initiative's award for outstanding research contribution.

The Cost of Climate Policy, co-written by SFU researchers Mark Jaccard (centre), John Nyboer (right) and Bryn Sadownik (left), estimates the costs of greenhouse gas reduction in Canada in terms of how it will affect the Canadian economy as a whole as well as regionally.

Jaccard, an international energy expert, is a professor in SFU's school of resource and environmental management and the director of the energy and materials research group. Nyboer and Sadownik are research associates with the energy and materials research group.

The book uses the Kyoto Accord as a focal point, and shows how Kyoto's tight timeframe results in relatively high costs that increase with each year of inaction. The authors don't take a position on whether Canada should ratify Kyoto; instead, they provide information to help decision-makers determine how and by how much to reduce emissions, and at what cost.
