Kinesiologist Steven Robinovitch has received a grant of $190,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation's New Opportunities fund. The grant will cover the purchase of a 3D-motion analysis system for examining the neuromuscular and behavioural variables that underlie age-related changes in balance, fall protective responses and the performance of daily tasks.
Robinovitch was one of three new SFU professors to receive CFI grants last year. Nadine Schuurman, an expert on geographic information systems, received $160,000 to set up a geospatial data lab. Physicist Jeff Sonier received $200,000 to purchase components for a solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance facility.
The CFI is a non-profit corporation set up by the federal government to fund research infrastructure at Canadian universities. The New Opportunities Fund provides infrastructure support to new academic staff within 18 months of taking up their first full-time academic appointment at a Canadian institution.
