Students

top science grad

Ashley Monks For the second consecutive year, an SFU graduate student was named one of the top four science and engineering PhD students in Canada. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Council (NSERC) honoured neuroscientist Ashley Monks for his research on how the nervous system in adults changes in response to hormones. Monks earned several other awards during his graduate career, including a $38,000 NSERC scholarship and the Governor General's gold medal in graduate studies.

Monks partly credits the collegiality of SFU for his success, as well as a mentorship with neuroscientist and associate professor of psychology Neil Watson. "There was an atmosphere of collaboration," says Monks. "The freedom to pursue ideas was encouraged."

NSERC is a federal agency that invests in basic research, university-industry projects and the training of Canada's next generation of scientists and engineers.
