SFU President Michael Stevenson with His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Special Convocation
On April 20, SFU conferred honorary degrees on three of the world’s best known Nobel laureates.

In an emotionally charged public ceremony at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Vancouver, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Iranian human rights activist and professor Shirin Ebadi, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama shared their inspirational messages of peace, hope, and reconciliation.

Desmond Tutu was instrumental in leading the movement to end apartheid in South Africa. Shirin Ebadi advocates for peaceful democratic solutions to society’s problems and is a strong defender of freedom of speech. The Dalai Lama, the religious and political leader of the Tibetan people, has taken his ecumenical message of peace and cooperation throughout the world.
