Subject: SFURA - message to retired faculty

To SFURA members,

I am passing along this message from Steven Davis, one of our new
members. It regards opportunities to be involved with higher
education in developing countries. If you are interested, please
reply to him. He has a short questionnaire concerning his proposal
which you may obtain from him or from me.

Regards,
Evelyn Palmer

Dear Colleague,

I am writing to ask for your advice about a project that I am
thinking of
launching.

Allow me to introduce myself. I taught in the Simon Fraser Philosophy
Department for 28 years from 1974 to 2002. I am now teaching at Carleton
University in the Philosophy Department and am director of its Centre on
Values and Ethics. (www.carleton.ca/cove)

I am thinking about creating a non-governmental organization that would
serve as a liaison between retired faculty and university
administrators and
colleges and universities in the developing world. The function of
the NGO
would be to arrange for retired faculty and administrators to be
visiting
professors or administrators at institutions of higher education in the
developing world to teach, or to give advice on university
administration.

Before I launch the project, I want to find out whether there is
interest
among retired faculty and administrators to participate in the
project. I
have attached a questionnaire to this message that will help me decide
whether I shall go forward. Would you be kind enough to fill it out and
return it to me? I would prefer that you do this anonymously so that you
don’t think that I am soliciting you to participate or to contribute
funds.
If the project goes forward, this might come in the future.

Thank you for your help.

Regards,
Steven Davis
