Jim Rahe has retired from the Department of Biological Sciences at SFU and he and his wife own and operate Annie’s Orchard.  Jim has offered to meet  us at 9:30 am September 5 to show us his orchard and give us a short talk about growing apples.  Gravensteins and perhaps  some other varieties will be available for sale.

Extra parking is available at the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church School across 248th St. and 50 meters south.

Larry’s fish farm is a 15 minute drive  north from Annie’s Orchard.

b) Larry Albright’s Fish Farm   24831 80th Ave, Langley    10:30am

    albright@sfu.ca

Larry Albright, also retired from the Department of Biological Sciences at SFU, has invited us to tour his freshwater fish farm in Langley. This is an exciting opportunity to see how sockeye salmon and rainbow trout for our food are cultured sustainably  without the use of antibiotics or other chemicals. His expertise in sustainable freshwater aquaculture has led to consultations in China, the United States and several First Nations bands in BC.  Larry is a dynamic interesting guy with lots of good stories and his farm is an amazing accomplishment; I think you would thoroughly enjoy meeting him. Some of you may have already done so as he generously gave a seminar about his work earlier this year.

Rainbow trout may be purchased from Larry for $1.60/lb  at the beginning of the tour. They will be cleaned and put in ice for you to take with you.

c) Trout barbecue and potluck picnic     Brae Island Park, Fort Langley     around noon

From the fish farm we will go to Brae Island Park in Fort Langley for a pot luck picnic and trout barbeque.  It is a lovely spot on the river, has clean washrooms, picnic tables, a canoe rental place and a snack bar. Larry will supply the trout so just bring along your favourite dish to share and whatever you want to drink.  The park is a 10 minute drive from the farm.

A nominal charge of $3 per person for the picnic barbeque will cover costs.

We need some volunteers to bring barbeques as there are none in the park.  Please let me know ASAP if you are able to help out.

We ask that you bring your own picnic paraphernalia – eating utensils, plates, etc. – but there will be disposable items on hand if needed.  Although there are 3 or 4 concrete picnic tables you may want to bring lawn chairs or a blanket.

Directions :  From highway 1 east, take exit #66 (232nd street), cross over the freeway and take the second right onto 72nd Ave. (NOT the entrance to the freeway going west) and drive east.

To Annie’s Orchard from 72nd Avenue driving east:  turn right on 248th St and drive south to 4092 – 248th St.

Extra parking is available at the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church School across 248th St. and 50 meters south.

To Larry’s fish farm from Annie’s Orchard:  drive north on 248th St. toward Robertson Crescent 6l4 km, continue on Telegraph Trail, and turn right on 80th Avenue to #24831 80th Ave, turn left into his driveway.

If you opt for Larry’s fish farm only:  from 72nd Ave driving east watch for the sign pointing to Driediger's farm delivery on the right side of the road. This is where you turn left onto 240th Street.  Then turn right onto 80th Ave. and go down a long curvy hill. After several curves watch for the Larry’s driveway (24831 80th Ave) as it will come up suddenly on the left side of the street.

Call my cell 604-461-1945 if you get lost en route or have any last minute questions the day of the event.
