This talk provides ten examples of real-world delusions caused by apparent randomness. In each case, the opportunity for a useful understanding is indicated. The examples involve sports leagues, auto fuel consumption, the stock market, industrial quality control, city sizes, marijuana use, traffic accidents, lotteries, peer review, and mutual fund performance. Although some results use simulations, the findings are presented graphically, so a background in stats is not required to follow this talk.
