SFURA walk - Wednesday, November 10

WEST VANCOUVER SEAWALL

The next SFURA walk is along the West Vancouver seawall on Wednesday, November 10 at 10:00 AM. Jay and Carolyn Burr will lead the walk. Jay and Carolyn have an expertise in bird watching, so bring binoculars if you have them. Jay will bring his spotting telescope. This scenic walk is level, mostly paved, and umbrella compatible. It is a pleasant walk even in the rain, but umbrellas would not be much help if windy. In this case bring good rain gear. If there is a strong wind from the S or W, the surf could be pretty exciting, as the high tide at 9:23 am will bring it onto the seawall promenade in one spot, which we would have to detour around.

Directions to the Meeting Spot:

From the Upper Levels Highway, exit at 15th or 21st street (22nd if coming from the West). Drive down the hill past Marine Drive (stoplight) and turn right onto Bellevue Ave. Turn left on 25th Street, cross the tracks and immediately turn left or right to find 4-hour parking. Walk down 25th street to the pier, where we will meet.

The Route We Will Take:

We will start at Dundarave Beach, walk SE along the sea wall past Ambleside to a Duck Pond, about 3 km, and then work our way back, perhaps stopping to see exhibits in the Ferry Building Art Centre and Silk Purse Arts Centre. This can take 2-3 hours.

There are many interesting species of wintering ducks at this time of year, feeding along the seawall and in the duck pond. There is a chance we will see river otters or a seal. Bring your binoculars; Jay will bring his spotting telescope. We will be stopping frequently to observe the wildlife. People who prefer to walk faster and farther can continue past the duck pond and follow the trail northward along the lower Capilano River, passing under a RR bridge and Marine Drive.

Meet for Lunch:

Back in Dundarave we will meet for lunch about 1:00 at the Verdicchio, 2409 Marine Drive, a delicatessen-style lunch spot featuring Italian foods and with about 20 seats inside and 20 outside.
