Dear colleagues in retirement….announcing a social event for Tuesday, November 30th
A day at the UBC Museum of Anthropology (MoA)
Tuesday, November 30th
The MoA has just completed a major expansion and renewal project. This includes the recent opening of the Reflecting Pool originally intended as part of the new Museum of Anthropology in 1976, and designed by the late Arthur C. Erickson and landscape architect, Cornelia Hahn Oberlander. This tour will give us the opportunity to explore in depth these new developments at the MoA.
As well, the MoA is presenting a new exhibition (Oct 30th to Jan 23rd) entitled “Man Ray, African Art and the Modernist Lens” that explores the pivotal role of photography in changing the perception of African objects from artifacts to fine art. Featured are more than 50 photographs by Man Ray from the 1920s and 1930s, and a number of these photographs are presented alongside the original African objects they feature. (See www.moa.ubc.ca for details).
Finally Dr. Anthony Shelton, Director of the MoA, will lead a free 1-hour Curator’s Tour that day on the theme of Latin American and Sub-Saharan Africa.
The agenda I propose for the day is as follows:
11:30 -- 12:30 Lunch at the Sage Bistro, UBC (across from the MoA)
1:00 -- 2:00 Curator’s Tour (free, and open to public)
2:15 -- 3:45 Guided tour for SFURA members only
3:45 -- ??? Time on your own to explore the Museum exhibits
The admission cost for seniors is $11.20.
The cost for the tour guide is $67.20. If we have, say, 20 attendees the additional cost would be $3.36 per person.
Thus, the total cost per person will likely be between $14 and $18 (not including lunch which would be in the order of $15 to $20 per person).
For those who feel the combination of activities might be too much, you might wish to skip lunch. We can also reduce the time for the guided tour if needed.
The MoA would prefer one person to
handle fees for the group, so I need to know how many plan to attend. Once I have that, I’ll let you know the
amount and you can write a cheque to me.
I’ll also need to know if you would like to join us for lunch so I can
make the necessary reservations at Sage.
