SFURA walk - Wednesday, August 24
Lighthouse Park
The next SFURA walk is at Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver on Wednesday, August 24 at 10:00 AM. Ted Cohn will lead the walk, which is rated Moderate and will take 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
From the East:
Cross the Second Narrows Bridge to North Vancouver and go West on the Upper Levels Highway. Take the exit at 21st street, and drive down the hill to Marine Drive. Turn right and travel West on Marine Drive. A little past a firehall, after a small rise in the road, Beacon Lane is on the left, and there will be a small sign for Lighthouse Park. Turn on Beacon Lane and follow it to the designated parking area. We will meet at the large map of the park further into the parking lot at 10:00 AM.
From Vancouver:
Cross the Lions Gate Bridge. Drive or take the bus west along Marine Drive from the north end of the Lions Gate Bridge for about 9.6 km (6 mi). A little past a firehall, after a small rise in the road, Beacon Lane is on the left. Turn and follow it to the designated parking area. We will meet at the large map of the park further into the parking lot at 10:00 AM.
THE ROUTE WE WILL WALK:
We will walk through a gate from the parking lot about halfway down on the left to take the Summit Trail and several side trails to the Arbutus Trail. This trail is quite rocky in spots and goes up and down, so hiking boots and a walking stick are recommended. Along the Arbutus Trail we will stop at the lookout at Eagle Point. We then will continue to old barracks where the Department of Defence billeted conscripts during World War II (it is now used as a Nature House), and then we’ll go to the Lighthouse at Point Atkinson. Travelling back, we will take several wide trails that are easy to walk on. The trails at Lighthouse Park are quite beautiful with old-growth coastal forest, rocky headlands and narrow bays. Bring a lunch, and (weather permitting) we will eat at picnic tables near the parking lot. If you have questions, contact Ted at cohn@sfu.ca.
