SFU Rowing’s first annual Alumni Day

November 19th, 2011

On October 16th SFU Rowing hosted it’s first SFU Rowing Alumni, Friends, and Supporters Day on the home course of Burnaby Lake.

Fortunately the sun was shining for the event, as the SFU Crew and the attendees spent an afternoon enjoying the sport of rowing.

Head Coach Jim Gardiner gave a speech about the rowing program and the goals that SFU Rowing aim for in the future; the dredging of Burnaby Lake playing an important role in the development of the team, with the successful dredging resulting in it being one of the best race courses in Canada.

Head Coach Jim Gardiner presenting a speech to the guests of Alumni Day.

It was appropriate then to name one of SFU’s boats after the City of Burnaby, as a tribute to the hard work that went into making the lake more accessible.

The name “City of Burnaby” was unveiled by some of the key people involved in the project: Burnaby Counselor Sav Dhaliwal; Burnaby Counselor Nick Volkow; Katy Alkins-Jang of Burnaby Parks and Recreation; and Lambert Chu of the Burnaby Engineering Department.

The unveiling of the "City of Burnaby".

Coach Jim Gardiner also introduced the Dick McClure Scholarship Fund, which will be presented to an individual that demonstrates good balance of both the academic and the athletic aspects of school. Dick McClure was presented with a memento to honour the occasion. The scholarship will pay for the student-athlete’s rowing dues and cover the cost of school books, and perhaps more as it grows as a fund.

The freshly named boat “City of Burnaby”, nicknamed the “COB” by the SFU Crew, was launched off the dock by some alumni men for a sunny row. The novice men also spent some time on the water.

The turnout was great, and SFU Rowing looks forwards to making this an annual event with more people celebrating rowing!

Fall 2011 Racing

November 10th, 2011

Western Canadian University Rowing Championships were held at Burnaby Lake on October 23. This was a day of firsts. This was the first 2Km sprint regatta to be held at Burnaby Lake since the dredging project had been completed. It was was also the first racing opportunity for SFU’s new novice crew.  Westerns would be many of our athletes’ only opportunity to race for the fall season. A great effort was given by all. We look forward to the winter/spring racing season with another race experience under our belts.

The Novice team cheering on SFU with great posters!

Canadian University Rowing Championships were held at the Welland international flat water course in Welland, Ontario on Nov. 5th and 6th. The SFU crew sent 3 of its very best to show Canadian Universities  what SFU rowing is made of.

The women’s pair consisted of Hilary Shrama in stroke seat and Krista Ruby as bow. The girls had a bit of a rough and rocky start on the training day, but managed to pull it together and lock down firm spot in the B final. The girls had their sights set on first place of B final wanting to beat out one of our rivals UBC. After an amazing race they finished 0.4 seconds off first .

Time:  7:53       Place: 8th

Taylor Hardy represented SFU’s men’s crew in the lightweight single. With a less than stellar performance in the time trials he managed to hold onto the last spot in the B final.  On finals day he redeemed himself. Coming into the last 250m he shot ahead of the UBC boat with help of Coach Jim Gardiner running alongside the course.  Time:  7:39                Place: 10th

Unfortunately we were only able to send a few athletes this year. We have our sights set on CURC 2012 and a full crew representing SFU!

Head of the Lake took place in Seattle, and SFU Rowing’s Solal Audibert competed in the men’s open double with Leonard Audibert, where they took 4th place with a time of 20:41. Nicely done!

But what do I wear/bring for rowing?
1.) Slim fitting clothes with no pockets. No hoodies, no baggy shorts. Spandex is good too.
2.) Socks! The boat has shoes in it for each person.
3.) Sandals or dock shoes (crocs) for getting in and out of the boat on the dock. We leave our shoes on the dock while going out to row on the lake, so don’t wear your prettiest Pradas!
4.) Bring a change of clothes and socks – new rowers tend to splash!
5.) The boathouse at Burnaby Lake has separate changing rooms for men and women, but there are no lockers, so leave your valuables at home.
6.) Water and a snack.
7.) Your Learn-to-Row fee and waiver form to the first class.
