A digital multispectral image of site 1 taken in October, 1997. The spatial resolution of this image is 1 metre. The three progressive-scan digital cameras were filtered to yeild a colour infrared image (green, red, and near infrared). The alder stands are a grey-green colour as their leaves have turned colour. The conifer stands are red because of high infrared reflectance. |

SFU Site 2. An example of a normal colour photo of SFU study site 2. This photo was taken in March 1998, therefore the Alders in the area (grey-brown trees) do not have leaves at this time. The orange squares along the trail are ground targets used to identify and map specific stands. |

The same area exposed with Kodak EIR film. The coniferous trees show up as reds and oranges because they are reflecting infrared radiation. The alders are visible as light brown/light orange. Targets appear yellow/white. The target at the site closest to the road is barely visible because of the high reflectance of the gravel surrounding the target area. Because of the films spectral sensitivity the crowns of the conifers have less detail (shadow) and appear as more distinct "clumps". Due to the image compression techniques used the difference between the conifers (1. Douglas-Fir are red, 2. Hemlock are magenta) is not as evident as it is in the original image. Also evident is some reflectance from the understory coming through the alder stand. This is seen as the red/orange mottling in the alder areas. |
