- Clowning Around for a Good Cause

June Fukumura volunteers at arts festival in Peru this summer

SCA 4th year Theatre Performance Major student June Fukumura is currently planning and fundraising for a 12-day humanitarian clown trip to Iquitos, Peru with The Belen Project. In addition to studying at SCA, June is also completing a Sustainability of Community Development certificate.

The project really spoke to June as it combines many of her passions – humanitarian aid, sustainability, travel and performance. The 9th annual Belen Festival runs Aug 5 - 17 in one of Peru’s poorest communities on the outskirts of Iquitos, the world’s largest city that is unreachable by road.

Clowning is used as a means to connect with the people who live there to provide public health and community development through art, healthcare and education. Each year the project sends over 100 volunteer clowns to perform in hospitals, prisons, hospices, and on the street, to lead free workshops and help paint houses and murals.

June is raising trip costs via crowdfunding on Indiegogo. Find out more about the project.

All the best June for reaching your target and heading to Peru this summer!
