SCA BFA grad (visua arts) Vishal Jugdeo was recently appointed assistant professor in the Department of Art in the School of the Arts and Architecture at UCLA. Congratulations, Vishal! Here's the text from the official announcement:

The UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture is pleased to announce the appointment of artist Vishal Jugdeo as assistant professor in the Department of Art.

Jugdeo, who earned his M.F.A. from the UCLA Department of Art in 2007, was born in Canada and is an interdisciplinary artist working between Los Angeles and New York. Jugdeo uses video, installation, performance, and sculpture to construct experimental approaches to narrative. Weaving together strategies from television, documentary and narrative cinema, and theater, he emphasizes the physical and psychical space around moving images and reveals the mediated process through which we interpret and understand the present as it unfolds.

“We are very excited that Vishal Jugdeo will be joining our faculty,” said Andrea Fraser, chair of the UCLA Department of Art. “With works exploring the boundaries between documentary and fiction, Vishal brings a depth of knowledge and experience in the theory and practice of video and installation art to the department.”

He has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at the ICA Philadelphia (2014); LAXART, Los Angeles (2006, 2008, 2009); Western Front, Vancouver (2005); and 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica (2016). Major commissioned works have been featured in Performa, New York (20130); the inaugural Made in LA biennial at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2012); and the California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art (2010). Jugdeo also has a forthcoming solo show at the Park Avenue Armory in New York titled Hurl a rock, which will open in 2018.

Prior to joining the Department of Art faculty, Jugdeo held several visiting faculty positions at respected institutions including UCLA, the Cooper Union School of Art, the Parsons School of Art and Design, CSU Long Beach, and USC, among others. In addition to his M.F.A. from UCLA, Jugdeo holds a B.F.A. from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, B.C. At UCLA, Jugdeo will be teaching in the new genres area.

"I am inspired by the broadening inclusiveness of the field of art, in terms of both who participates and what can be considered art," said Jugdeo. "I’m thrilled to join the faculty in the Department of Art, and in particular the New Genres area, where students are empowered to explore the connection between their lived experience and the art they make."
