The Nature Effect

Working together in Denise Oleksijczuk's Spring 2019 class, "CA 314: Art and Visual Culture in Romantic-Era Britain," SCA students Audrey Shiu, Abbie Lee, Angelo Villasoto, Josh Cabrita, and Johnny Chi curated The Nature Effect, an exhibition in SFU's W.A.C. Bennett Library, running from March 22 to April 5, 2019, that drew from the Library's Special Collections archive and other local historical archives. Responding to the subject and scope of the class, which critically examined British art and popular visual culture during the rise of empire and colonialism from 1780 to 1832, The Nature Effect illustrated how British Columbia's so-called supernatural surroundings were "used to attract Europeans to the region."
