Romeo + Juliet

My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite.

From the moment they first check each other out at the Capulet’s party, Romeo and Juliet cannot bear to be apart. Their love is immediate, passionate, all consuming. But the ridiculous hate between their warring families surrounds their nascent union with danger. Young love proves no match for the grotesque greed and righteous rancor that defines Romeo and Juliet’s Verona. One of the greatest love stories ever told, Romeo and Juliet remains a breathtaking tale of love in the face of hatred, and our inability to halt tragedy before it spirals out of our control.

A stupidly large cast, poisonous nightmares, more gold and glitter than you can imagine, the Rolling Stones, movement and dance, high heels with lip synching, some sword fighting, and a good old punch. In their contemporary production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, SFU's School for the Contemporary Arts asks, to what extend do we fall prey to the romantic glorification of love? And, is the absence of love a testament to a love of death?

Preview: Feb 22 @ 8pm

Romeo + Juliet: Special Matinee

Free matinee for high school students and members of the East Hastings community!

We’d like to invite you and your students to a special "free admission" matinee of our contemporary production of Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet. We thought this would be of particular interest to students who are currently in theatre classes as well as non-theatre students who’ve recently encountered Shakespeare as part of the school curriculum.

The matinee will be on March 4th at 2:00pm. It is free admission but first-come, first-serve. It will be held at the Fei & Milton Wong Experimental Theatre in Simon Fraser University at Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, which is at 149 West Hastings Street, in downtown Vancouver.

Prior to the show, there will be a tour of the campus at 12pm led by Dean Lastoria, the SCA's New Students and Retention Administrator. This may be of interest to some of your students, as well.

Additionally, the director, Cole Lewis, and the cast will participate in a Q&A following the performance.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Shahlla Karmali, who's a theatre production and design student working on publicity, at shahllak@sfu.ca with any further questions!
