Soliloquy in English

Part reading circle and part documentary printed on a re-pulped Oxford Dictionary, Soliloquy in English is a book for multiple voices about the language that connects them. In each performance, a small group of readers join Vancouver-based artist Patrick Blenkarn in reading the book out loud, passing it from hand to hand and voice to voice. In doing so, the readers bring to life a collage of stories (interviews with the artist's friends, family, and mentors) about what it means to share and live in the English language today—the dreams it makes possible and the marks it can leave behind. Soliloquy in English is an attempt to pull this lingua franca back upon itself, to get us talking about how we are talking.

Soliloquy in English was first developed during the 2016 MFA Spring Show and premiered in Toronto as part of the Live Art Series at the 2016 SummerWorks Performance Festival.

Mirror Staging the Seeing Place

Mirror Staging the Seeing Place is a choreographic project that exploits the mechanics of image construction within the theatrical apparatus to reconfigure cultural representations that are embedded in the female body. Dually informed by a practice-based research and an 18 month-long intellectual courtship with feminist psychoanalytic theory, the project centres around the figure of the dancer. Working with a movement base generated through a mimetic reproduction of North American pop-cultural icons from the late 20th century and gender-specific stereotypes, the solo dancer performs a series of deconstructive actions which increasingly mutate the original forms, in order to revise (re-vision) how the female body is perceived.

Presented by the School for the Contemporary Arts at SFU.
