The Theatre BFA Performance program offers a rigorous, dynamic approach to contemporary theatre practice. The program is respected nationally and internationally for its unique emphasis on ensemble techniques, physical practice, devising, and dramaturgy. Graduates of the theatre program find professional work around the world; many have continued their studies in graduate schools across North America.
Students enter the program through an audition process after completing two first-year performance courses, or through transfer credit from colleges and university programs. Our studio cohort approach emphasizes rigorous artist training in both individual work and ensemble creation. Performance students take studio courses in acting, movement, voice, playmaking, clown, directing, devising and dramaturgy; academic courses in critical and dramatic literature; and courses outside the discipline with a special emphasis on production and design. An honors degree allows our top-ranked students an opportunity to extend their studies and take further advantage of interdisciplinary collaboration.
Students at every level of the program have performance opportunities with mainstage productions directed by guest professionals (Fall) and faculty (Spring), student directing projects (Fall), and a student-directed playmaking blackbox (Spring). In addition, students often collaborate with students from other areas of School for Contemporary Arts (Dance, Film, Music, Production/Design, Visual Arts,) and in graduate student projects and faculty performance research.
Many alumni of the Theatre Performance Program have gone on to launch independent theatre companies known nationally and internationally for their ensemble approach and innovative productions.
