Our Students

Our graduate students thrive under the mentorship of leading SFU researchers in our progressive research community. In five of the last seven years, SFU graduate students have received Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council (NSERC) doctoral prizes, out of only four awarded annually across Canada.

Our Faculty

In the last five years, our number of faculty members has grown by 20%. Our new faculty join our established body of prominent researchers to pursue innovative research in areas such as natural products chemistry, fuel cell research, biomedical research, nanotechnology, materials science, and plant biotechnology. This has translated into securing significant national and international accolades:

  • 15 current Canada Research Chair appointments in the Faculty of Science
  • 3 Human Frontier Science grants in 2007 (of 25 worldwide, with only 7 in Canada)
  • Consistently higher award rate from Canadian granting bodies (compared to national average rates), in areas such as discovery, research tools and instruments, ideas to innovation, and health research

Our Facilities

  • Biological research: fresh and salt water aquarium facilities, quarantined insectary, 11-metre research vessel, boat and vehicle transports, animal care facility, and more
  • 4D Laboratories – Centre for Research in Electronic Materials
  • Laboratory for Advanced Spectroscopy and Imaging Research (LASIR)
  • Environmental Medicine and Physiology Unit (Hyper/hypobaric Chamber)
  • Facilities jointly operated with other universities:
TRIUMF (Physics), and Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (Biology)
