Community EngagementThe Faculty of Science is a leader in offering science education to BC high school and elementary students, First Nations communities and the general public. These programs give us an opportunity to showcase our world-class laboratories and classrooms on the SFU campus, share the findings and knowledge of our cutting edge researchers and foster science literacy for all.
Our students and faculty also support many other community events and engagement by offering their services as classroom lecturers, judges, mentors and coaches. Please contact scirec@sfu.ca for further information.
Two of our main outreach programs are Science In Action and Starry Nights. To see what goes on at these events watch this video:
Programs for Children and Youth: Science AL!VE is a student-run program that introduces students to the wonders of science through summer camps, in-class workshops and science clubs. Click on the link to learn more about getting your kids involved in this fun and interactive program.
The Let's Talk Science Partnership Program is a national volunteer program where undergraduate and graduate students promote science literacy for children. We do this by partnering grad student volunteers with teachers and by getting involved in community science outreach.
EC4U (Experimental Chemistry for Us) is designed to get K-7 students engaged in Chemistry at a young age. Designed by Dr. Sophie Lavieri, this program allows students to participate in hands-on activities to see how exciting science can be.
Science in Action is an innovative program organized by multiple departments at SFU that offers a science immersion day in the Faculty of Science at SFU at no cost school groups. The program targets high school students who may have limited exposure to the sciences and has a focus on providing lab experiences to students.
The Physics Department offers a variety of educational workshops, activities and presentations to high school and elementary schools. Most popular has been the Starry Nights program, which has hosted hundreds of families at SFU for stargazing evenings, starry movie nights and other fantastic activities.
The Math department offers multiple outreach programs including the Taste of Pi enrichment program for high school math students, sponsoring the BC Math Challengers contest each year and running summer math camps.
USTEP - University Science Transition Experience Program This program allows qualifying high school students to receive high school credit for attending specially designed seminars at SFU. This free program was developed in consultation with local school districts and allows students enrolled in an advance placement or independent studies program to enrich their high school education and experience the campus environment.
