2012

• Professor John Clague of Earth Sciences wins the Geological Association of Canada's 2012 J. Willis Ambrose Medal for his "sustained dedicated service to the Canadian earth science community"

• Professor David Vocadlo (Department of Chemistry) selected to receive the Horace S. Isbell Award from the American Chemical Society, Carbohydrate Division in recognition of his ongoing excellence in carbohydrate chemistry research

• Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology professor Andy Hoffer's research spin-off company Lungpacer Medical Inc. wins the Most Promising Pre-Commercial Technology award from BC Technology Industry Association, followed by the silver medal at the 2012 World's Best Technologies Showcase

• Professor Mario Pinto (Department of Chemistry) receives the 2012 R.U. Lemieux Award of the Canadian Society for Chemistry for his contributions to organic chemistry

• Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology professor and neuromuscular diseases researcher Charles Krieger wins the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal

• Mathematics professor Veselin Jungic wins the Canadian Mathematical Society 2012 Excellence in Teaching Award

2011

• Associate Professor of Mathematics Adam Oberman awarded the eighth Monroe H. Martin Prize for an outstanding paper in applied mathematics by a young researcher

• Professor Steve Ruuth (Department of Mathematics) receives the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics' Germund Dahlquist Prize for his original contributions, especially in "the numerical solution of differential equations and numerical methods for scientific computing"

• SFU Chemistry professor and glycobiologist David Vocadlo awarded an NSERC E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship for his research in the field of glycobiology

• Department of Mathematics professor Veselin Jungic receives the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences Education Prize for his "significant contribution to education in the mathematical sciences"

• Robert N. Young, SFU's Merck Frosst-BC Leadership Chair in Pharmaceutical Genomics, Bioinformatics and Drug Discovery receives a 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Victoria in honour of his eminent career and contributions to pharmaceutical chemistry  

2010

• Evolutionary biologist Bernard Crespi elected to the Royal Society of Canada

• Four Faculty of Science researchers honoured with 2010 LifeSciences British Columbia awards: Andy Hoffer (Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology) received the Innovation and Achievement award for devising and developing implantable medical devices, while Rob Holt, Marco Marra and Steve Jones of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry were awarded the Genome BC Award for Scientific Excellence

• Danny Leznoff (Department of Chemistry) receives the Strem Chemicals Award for Pure or Applied Inorganic Chemistry from the Canadian Society for Chemistry

• Chemistry Professor Steve Holdcroft receives the 2010 Macromolecular Science and Engineering Award from the Chemical Institute of Canada

• SFU Top Fundraisers in Spread the Net Campaign

• Mathematician Matt DeVos awarded a two-year Sloan Research Fellowship to pursue his work in the area of graph theory

• Charmaine Dean (Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science) named Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
