Simon Fraser University's Centre for Scottish Studies invites you to the annual St. Andrews and Caledonian lecture. At this year's virtual event, the lecture will be delivered by Dr. Ralph McLean, curator of 18th-century manuscripts at the National Library of Scotland. His lecture, "The Lyon in Mourning," Manuscripts in the National Library of Scotland," is described as follows:

“The Lyon in Mourning” manuscripts are among the most important treasures held at the National Library of Scotland. A key source of eye-witness accounts to the Jacobite uprising of 1745 and the aftermath of Culloden in 1746, these hand-written volumes compiled by Bishop Robert Forbes were closely guarded by him during his lifetime. In this talk, Dr. Ralph McLean (National Library of Scotland) will explore the transmission history of these manuscripts as they passed through the hands of Forbes and into the possession of the Library. The talk will also examine how “The Lyon in Mourning” has subsequently been used by the Library to showcase the history of Jacobitism to wider audiences.

Scottish Studies Director Leith Davis will also give an update on the Centre and discuss its plans for 2022 and beyond.

Register for this exciting event, which takes place on Saturday, November 20th (12 p.m., Pacific Time) here.
