Fitness Volunteers will mostly assist with the running of a variety of fitness programs. As a volunteer, you’ll also get the chance to help out with a number of projects by working closely with the Senior Recreation Leader and Fitness Coordinator.
Also, this volunteer position might lead to on-campus employment; for example, to be considered for Fitness Centre Supervisor positions, this fitness volunteer experience is required.
I highly recommend applying for this position because I had a great experience when I signed up as a Fitness Volunteer last Fall semester. I had the opportunity to assist personal trainers in running a few group classes such as circuit training. In addition to meeting new people on campus, I had a lot of fun while learning a lot of techniques from the trainers.
Through this opportunity, you’ll learn more about fitness, but you’ll also develop patience, confidence, communications and leadership skills. A good mix of students, staff and faculty regularly sign up for the various group classes and you may end up helping them out, so there may also be an opportunity to network with various university stakeholders.
If you’re interested, fill out the application form and contact Samantha Garcia before March 19, 2010. To learn more about the position, please visit the SFU Recreation Work & Volunteer Opportunities website.
