This Friday, November 5th, Beneath One Sky will be hosting Pies Against Poverty, a fundraiser benefiting the organization’s projects in the downtown east side. The fundraiser will take place in the Convocation Mall from 10:00am to 2:00pm and will feature a whole day of pie throwing and a bake sale.
Proceeds from the event will support one of Beneath One Sky’s key programs. Twice a month, Beneath One Sky ventures down to East Hastings to distribute food, blankets, and other essentials to those living on the streets of downtown Vancouver. The program is called Backpack Runs because volunteers bring with them a backpack filled with basic essentials (old sweaters, blankets, old clothes, granola bars, snack foods etc.) and pass out these items, along with food, to the less fortunate.
With the winter season coming in, many people in the downtown east side will be left out, hungry and cold. This situation makes Beneath One Sky’s project even more relevant and pressing today.
If you’d like to get involved, the organization requires volunteers who are willing to get a pie thrown at their face. It’s all for good fun, of course – and you’ll be doing it to help fight poverty in Vancouver. Students, professors, and staff are all invited. If you’re interested, please contact Brenton Collakoppen.
Beneath One Sky is a non-profit whose mission is to conquer poverty locally and globally. It is also an SFU student club. To find out more about this amazing organization, visit their official website. You can also connect with Beneath One Sky via Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
