If you love to dine out in Vancouver, it’s likely that you’ve seen this symbol before. I stumbled across it quite a few times before I discovered what it meant. This is the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise symbol. It is a program many sustainability-conscious restaurants participate in, wherein their menu has this symbol next to all seafood items that are environmentally friendly.
You might be wondering: why should we be so concerned about sustainable seafood? According to the Ocean Wise website, there are two main reasons:
Ocean Wise is a conservation program created by the Vancouver Aquarium to inform consumers about sustainable seafood. This program also works with restaurants, markets, and other food services and suppliers to develop a means of ensuring that they access current information about seafood. This makes it easy for these businesses to make sustainable buying decisions, as well. This element of the program is invaluable, as it provides businesses with the tools to act on their customers’ behalf.
Most Vancouverites enjoy the availability of some of the freshest, highest-quality seafood in the world. But at the rate we’re going, we may soon lose that luxury.
So when you’re choosing seafood, look for restaurants, suppliers, and caterers that are part of the Ocean Wise program – you can find them all here. The Ocean Wise website has a complete list of restaurants and other partners participating in the program.
As a Vancouver resident who loves her fish, I’ve definitely become more aware about where I eat seafood. You can still enjoy your fish – just eat wisely so they’ll be around for a long time to come!
