Take Off Your Clothes… for a Good Cause?

2011 Underwear Affair in Vancouver

Like everyone else I always look forward to the multitude of events and activities I have planned each summer.  One of the events I look forward to the most is the Underwear Affair.  The event this year takes place on Saturday July 9th and you can register on the website.  This is my third year running and my team is bigger and better than ever!  Around this time of year I’m always trying to round up donations and getting my teammates to spread the word about the only event you get to participate in wearing your underwear.

No matter if you want to run, walk or volunteer, the Underwear Affair is a fun opportunity to support a fantastic cause.  The Underwear Affair runs in a handful of large Canadian cities every summer to raise money for cancers below the belt.  All funds go directly to the BC Cancer Foundation to support research and care.  The race starts and finishes at the Seaforth Armoury on Burrard Street.  The 10km run is along the seawall in False Creek taking runners by Granville Island, Science World and finally finishing across the Burrard Street Bridge.  The 5km walk is a shortened route along the seawall.  Participating in your underwear isn’t mandatory but many runners and walkers do end up in their tighty whities.

If walking or running isn’t your forte, the Underwear Affair is always looking for volunteers.  Volunteers are needed for pre-race help with administrative activities.  Volunteers will also be needed to help coordinate on the big day; helping runners and walkers get their numbers, find their starting areas, and cheer and encourage participants along the course.  From my experience, this has consistently been one of the highlights of my entire summer.  Whether you have dreams of running through the city in your underwear or simply want to volunteer and encourage others, the Underwear Affair is a really fun event that anyone and everyone can get involved with!
