2 Obstacles to Achieving Your Goals

Achieving goals is like climbing a mountain: challenging, tiring, and energy-consuming, but worth all the effort once accomplished. With both achieving goals and mountain-climbing, there are two obstacles to overcome. I will highlight what these obstacles are, so that you can conquer them.

Obstacle #1:  Lack of Desire

Description:

The first obstacle to goal-achievement is lacking the desire to achieve your goals in the first place. By having no desire to achieve any goals, it eliminates any possibility of accomplishing them at all. In the same way, a mountain will never be climbed without first having the desire to climb it.

Reasons:

There are several reasons why people lack the desire to accomplish their goals. These include:

Solutions:

Perhaps it may be safer to settle for mediocrity, or not have any goals at all. Perhaps avoiding failure by staying in your comfort zone seems like the best option. But unless you take the risk to dream for more, you will never have a life of fulfillment. In the same way, a person who stays safely in the valley will never experience the exhileration of standing at the top of a mountain.

Thus, the key to conquering the first obstacle is to take courage.  Seize the courage to create goals for yourself –regardless of the risk— and soon you will have the desire to begin achieving them.

Obstacle #2:  Lack of Perseverance

Description:

So you’ve established the courage to set goals for yourself, and you’ve taken the first steps to begin achieving them. However, halfway through, you start feeling discouraged. Giving up, you leave your goals behind.

Reasons:

There are many reasons why people feel discouraged midway through achieving their goals. These include:

Solutions:

The key to overcoming this second obstacle is to have patience. Patience is the root of perserverance. Although it can be discouraging when others seem to achieve their goals faster than you, realize that people grow and accomplish things at different paces. Have the patience to believe that eventually you will accomplish your goals –perhaps not in the timeline you envisioned—but eventually, nonetheless. Be patient and keep going.

With that said, I urge you to take the risk of climbing that mountain of goal-achievement.  Dare to set goals for yourself, and dare to perservere in accomplishing them. You will not miss out on the beautiful view that comes with climbing mountains, just as you will not miss out on the rewards that come from following your dreams.
