The mentoring program is set up to promote healthy eating and physical activity among young girls as well as encouraging them to develop a positive self-image. Volunteer mentors each lead a group of girls to participate in fun and educational activities and discussions about balanced eating, active living and self-esteem.
This opportunity is great for female students between the ages of 19 and 25 in any discipline who are passionate about making a difference in someone else’s life! Mentors need to be able to be available at least one weekend each week between the hours of 2:30 and 5:30pm starting in January 2012 and ending in April 2012. The spring sessions run April through June 2012. “Being a Go Girls! mentor has been an amazing experience. Aside from developing leadership and interpersonal skills, I have had so much fun teaching girls about balanced eating, active living and self-esteem. From this program, I have seen the girls develop new friendships with each other and display greater confidence. Thus, this has been a very fulfilling experience, and since I had so much fun this semester I have signed up for the next cycle!,” said Sandra, an SFU student who is currently volunteering as a Go Girls! mentor.
