International Women’s Day: Extraordinary Women, Extraordinary Times

March 8th of this year will be a Thursday. Thursdays are one of the days that get lost in the week—not the dreaded Monday, not the exciting Friday, whatever happens on Thursdays is usually insignificant and quickly forgotten.

But not this year.

March 8th, 2012 is International Women’s Day. All around the world , extraordinary women will be celebrating the times they live in, the freedoms for which they have fought and won, and the freedoms they will fight for in the future.

Today, woman to woman, I invite you to join us.

Who is us, exactly? Last year, Reuters compiled a great slideshow of the celebrations and events that happened worldwide, you can check it out here.

And now this year, it’s your turn. On March 10th, 2012, YWiB SFU will be celebrating and recognizing the achievements of women in SFU Woodwards at the YWiB SFU International Women’s Day Conference.

Here’s what you can expect:

“The event will feature keynote speakers, an interactive panel session and an expo. The speakers will be invited to share their stories in regards to personal experiences as women in their industry. The panel will discuss a variety of questions regarding the unique challenges women face in today’s world and ways to overcome them. The expo will be an opportunity to showcase entrepreneurs, startups, and not for profit organizations dedicated to women’s rights and advancement.”

Sound interesting? You can read more on their website including profiles of the panelists and speakers, and how to buy tickets.

Want to know more about IWD’s history or how it is celebrated in other countries around the world? Here’s a great video and timeline. Reading about women over a hundred years ago who worked together to make their lives and the lives of future women better is not only inspiring, it is compelling. It’s time to do our part.

Extraordinary woman, I invite you to be a reason we are living in such extraordinary times.
