It’s a big jump from the SFU gym to the hallways of Oxford University, but Courtney Brown is poised to make the leap. The award-winning honour-roll women’s basketball star, a major force on this year’s championship team, is Oxford-bound to begin a master’s degree in the science and medicine of athletic performance. After a stellar year that culminated with a Canadian Inter-university Sport (CIS) championship finish, Brown is taking a fresh look at the athletics side of her life.

"I plan to do some clinics and get involved in some camps in my hometown of Orillia, Ontario this summer," she says, "but I am looking forward to a break from playing. Next year while in England I will get involved in sports in some level but I might give some other sports a look."

Brown joined the Clan from Orillia where she was named 2002 high school athlete of the year, having been chosen MVP of the basketball, volleyball and track teams. Not only a hard worker on the court, Brown’s academic performance earned her several awards, including a Jack Diamond entrance scholarship and the William De Vries Award, recognizing academic achievement, athletic performance, integrity and leadership qualities. She retained status as an Academic All Canadian every year she played at SFU.

Brown was also a CIS Sylvia Sweeney Award nominee for outstanding academics, athletics and community involvement. In addition to playing and studying, Brown helps run basketball clinics for local high school and elementary school basketball programs and works with troubled teens from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. She also helps with the SFU Clan new student orientation and runs a team mentorship program.

Coach Bruce Langford says "Courtney is the perfect example of a student athlete who combines service for others while maintaining a top-quality academic performance and competing on a highly competitive basketball team. She’s a winner in every respect."
