Panel to discuss Burma's future
At SFU’s School for International Studies she is adjunct professor Ma Tin Yee. But to the hundreds of Burmese refugees in Thai-Burma border camps—particularly
young women—whom she helped to escape being trafficked to Thailand and other countries for sexual and labour exploitation, she is simply Auntie Rosy. Herself a Burmese political exile, Tin Yee founded Empowering Women of Burma (EWOB) in 1992 to help refugees “achieve freedom through education.” She is a scheduled speaker at the school’s Nov. 25 panel discussion, Unpacking Burma’s 2010 National Election: A Nation in Transition. The panel explores the political and human rights situation in Burma following the Nov. 7, 2010 national elections and the release of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi after her 15-year house arrest.
