The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band took second place Aug. 13 at the World Pipe Band championships in Glasgow, Scotland. Perennial rival Field Marshal Montgomery from Northern Ireland took first after finishing second over third-place SFU last year. Scottish band Scottish Power finished third this year. SFU President Andrew Petter, on vacation in Ireland, was in Glasgow for the competition. The SFU band has now placed second nine times since it began competing at the Worlds in 1983—the most for any band. SFU has won six world championships, in 1995, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2008 and 2009, and is one of only three non-U.K. bands to come first at the Worlds.
