Burns poetry reading sets world record
Four hours, nine minutes and 24 seconds. That’s the record-setting time established by SFU at a Robbie Burns Day poetry-reading marathon held at SFU’s Vancouver campus on Wednesday, Jan. 25. SFU President Andrew Petter was the first reader at 8:24 am, adopting a Scottish brogue to recite A Man’s a Man for A’ That, while a chorus of Auld Lang Syne brought the record home at 12:33 pm. More than 100 participants contributed to setting the mark. News of the marathon even reached Burns’ native Scotland, as University of Glasgow faculty and students skyped in with their favorite selections. “I couldn’t be happier, says Leith Davis, director of SFU’s Centre for Scottish Studies. “Burns’ message of community and democracy for all is still very alive today.” See video: http://at.sfu.ca/FZoFAd.
