people participate in SFU youth camps and learning experiences

  • SFU’s various youth camps and learning experiences reach more than 10,000 participants each year. SFU summer camps engage more than 5,000 students annually and student mentors in the Friends of Simon tutoring program assist more than 250 elementary school kids each year.
  • The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) initial candidacy evaluation committee commended SFU on “the breadth, depth, and quality of its community outreach efforts” and “its remarkable effort to inculcate community values and serve local, provincial and international constituencies.”
  • In 2009, IPAC/Deloitte presented SFU with a gold award for public-sector leadership in education in recognition of its successful efforts to become rooted in local communities.
  • SFU has active agreements with 183 international partner institutions. These agreements include international student exchange and mobility programs, joint academic programs and other collaborative programs and projects.
  • SFU’s computing science dual-degree program, offered by the  School of Computing Science in partnership with China’s Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, won a province-wide award for being an outstanding program in international education.
  • The university’s newly created Institute for Aboriginal Research and its Executive MBA for Aboriginal Business—a Canadian first—are examples of the major initiatives SFU is making to link with aboriginal communities.
