Sweater Day knits energy savings

March 15, 2012

SFU helped celebrate National Sweater Day last month by lowering temperatures in buildings across the Burnaby campus by two degrees Celcius. Bernard Chan, an energy specialist with Facilities Services, says the energy cutback saved almost 190 gigajoules of natural gas, the equivalent to the annual gas consumption of two average Lower Mainland households. “We also reduced greenhouse gas emissions by about 9,400 kg, which is equivalent to the amount of carbon sequestered by 240 trees seedlings grown for 10 years.”
