Ravneet Dhaliwal earned more than $60,000 in scholarships to fund her studies at SFU’s Beedie School of Business. Rather than rest on her laurels, however, she helps others emulate her achievements.

Dhaliwal is the co-founder of Math4me, an organization that puts a new spin on tutoring and has helped more than 3,500 K-12 students calculate their own success. The program offers tutoring and mentorship, as well as career guidance, university application assistance, and scholarship advice.

“I wanted to put together a program that not only helped the students in school, but also provided the kind of opportunities that I had myself, to let them find their passion in life,” says Dhaliwal.

“Many of our clients just come for the mentorship–they are already smart, inspired young people with excellent grades, but want to know how to translate their academics into real-world results.”

Math4Me has grown to six locations across the Lower Mainland serving hundreds of students every term. Those who come for help with math not only watch their marks rise but many who are graduating apply for scholarships. In 2011 Math4me’s students surpassed $100,000 in successful applications.

“I’m very passionate about helping others succeed, and Math4Me became a direct way to help mentor and guide students,” says Dhaliwal.

She was recognized in 2012 with a Surrey Board of Trade ‘Top 25 Under 25’ award and, in 2014, a Vancouver Board of Trade ‘Women of Promise’ award.

Despite graduating this month with a Bachelor of Business Administration, she plans to continue her involvement in the program.

Dhaliwal credits her SFU studies, as well as mentors, professors, family and friends, for supplying her with the expertise to run a social enterprise.

“The SFU community has always been a huge inspiration and motivation to give back and help others,” she says.

She intends to pursue further education in accounting, finance, social entrepreneurship and strategy, and is considering new projects to advance female entrepreneurship around the world.

“Touching the lives of so many others has a powerful motivating effect. It helps drive me to follow my passion.”
