Simon Fraser University’s six-time world champion Pipe Band is once again hosting its annual Robbie Burns dinner and auction, on Saturday, January 23.

The event. a fundraiser for its highly successful youth band program, will be held at Coquitlam’s Executive Plaza Hotel and will feature an evening of Scottish food and band performances in celebration of Robbie Burns Day (the Scottish bard’s date of birth is Jan. 25).

SFU’s Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band provides a range of instruction to youth and currently has bands competing in Grades 5, 3 and 2 (the SFU senior band is an elite Grade 1 band) as well as a beginner music program to help young musicians get a head start before deciding to take up the pipes or drums. Like the senior band, RMM bands have also taken home some world championship hardware, including a Grade 3 world championship in 2012.

The SFU Pipe Band will kick off its year with the annual event, followed by months of practice and preparation for the World Pipe Band Championships in August. The past year saw the band, under Pipe Major Alan Bevan, earn a 5th place win on the World stage and play a sold-out performance at the Glasgow Concert Hall. The band has been one of the world’s top bands for more than two decades.
