SFU Photography Summer School

August 16, 2016

The Photography Summer School is a series of workshops for children from Syria, who have recently arrived in Canada. Shawk Alani, who is a master's student in Graduate Liberal Studies at Simon Fraser University, is the organizer. Shawk is originally from Iraq, and over the years she grew frustrated with the narrow perspective of mainstream media when reporting on immigrants. Her intent with this initiative is to teach the Syrian children how one can use photography and visual art to tell stories. She hopes to empower the children with the tools to tell their stories from their own perspectives.

Alani is also curating a gallery show of the children's work, "Capturing Our Stories: An Exhibition of Syrian Children's Photography," at the Interurban Gallery downtown. The show opens on August 31, 2016 with free admission to the public
