Simon Fraser University security supervisor John Nguyen has been recognized with the Officer of the Year award from the Western Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. The award recognizes outstanding skill in the typical duties of a public safety, security or police officer.

“I think this award is indicative of the professionalism and dedication that members of our department provide to the community,” says Steven Maclean, senior director, Campus Safety and Security Services.

“John is dedicated to providing a high-quality level of safety and security services to our University community.  His level-headed, honest and personable approach to dealing with people and situations instills confidence in his abilities as a public safety professional.”

Nguyen joined SFU in 2000 and has held his current position for the past three years, overseeing the contract staff’s day-to-day safety and security operations. He says his work has taken on a personal aspect, and that the feeling of community is what helps drive him forward.

“The longer that I spend here, the more students and staff became my family," says Nguyen.

"I don’t really see it as work. It’s something that needs to be done, like a situational problem at home. You need to resolve it before you leave.”
