Join us for Vancouver’s only all candidates debate!

Back by popular demand, Last Candidate Standing – a unique event that is open to each and every candidate running for mayor and council.

Last Candidate Standing is an election ‘mixer.’ It allows incumbents and new nominees, independents and party-affiliated candidates to share the same stage, answer questions, and showcase their political chops.

The event is hosted by our lively MC Mark Busse, Industrial Brand partner & managing director, and features the Panel of Inquisition members: Emily Jackson of Metro News, CTV News reporter Jon Woodward and Jackie Wong, UBC/Megaphone Magazine. It’s eclectic, informative and entertaining. There’s a house band, musical interludes from The New Shackletons and a gong.

It’s most certainly not your typical election debate!

IMPORTANT:

This event is FREE, but seating is limited. The 2008 and 2011 editions of Last Candidate saw capacity audiences and a waiting list.

CANDIDATES:Are you running for municipal office?

We want to make sure that every candidate for Mayor and Council has a chance to be part of Last Candidate Standing. Please contact jessica [at] vancouverpublicspace [dot] ca to make sure part of the fun!

MORE INFO

What is Last Candidate Standing all about?

The intent has always been to turn the typical election debate (a limited number of candidates, a formula that varies little, well-rehearsed talking points) on its head – while having a bit of fun in the process. There’s a diversity of candidates running for office – each with their own ideas about the future of the city. Last Candidate aims to provide a forum in which as many of these ideas – and the personalities behind them – can be showcased.

How does the event work?

Structured as a series of rotating debates, the event starts when the names of all candidates are put into a drum. A handful of names are randomly drawn at a time, and each ‘set’ of candidates has a question posed to them by the ‘Panel of Inquisition’ – a group of local journalists and notables.

The best answers from each set – as determined by a combination of votes and audience applause – earn a pass to the next round. The next set of names is drawn and the process repeats itself until all participants have had a chance to answer a question.

The ‘contest’ – such as it is – is good fun and is designed to encourage a lively atmosphere, good civic engagement, and the chance to showcase the widest possible range of candidates.
