Hard Rubber New Music presents Variety Show, an eclectic evening of music featuring the 18-piece Hard Rubber Orchestra. The program will include, the 12-piece Riot Ensemble performing selections from Riot with visuals by Brian Johnson, Aram Coen and Sammy Chien; plus special guests – saxophonist John Gross and the trio Waxwing among others.

The high-energy 18-piece Hard Rubber Orchestra, one of Canada's most unpredictable ensembles, will perform works by John Korsrud and Ron Samworth, and by emerging composer Karl Wallace-Deering.

The 12-piece Riot Ensemble will play excerpts from Riot, a work-in-progress that merges video footage of the 2011 melee with high-energy music inspired by the chaos of that night. Driven by an investigation into mob mentality, privilege, culpability, and sports riots in North America, Riot seeks to immerse one in the incomprehensible. Riot is a multi-media work in progress featuring 12-musicians, composition by John Korsrud, and work by filmmaker Brian Johnson.

Waxwing is an original project of cellist Peggy Lee, saxophonist Jon Bentley and guitarist Tony Wilson. John Gross is an internationally renowned saxophonist recently moved to Vancouver from Portland.

Formed in 1990, the Hard Rubber Orchestra, one of Canada's most active and unpredictable ensembles of new music and recipient of the 2005 Alcan Arts Award, has released 3 CDs, toured across Canada and to Europe, and produced large scale productions including Cantata for a King, and The Ice Age, a new music ice show. Riot is a work in progress to be presented as a full 60-minute production in 2019.
