On November 14, Reel Causes will host a screening of the film My Dads, My Moms and Me from filmmaker Julia Ivanova. There will be a post-film Q&A with filmmaker Julia Ivanova and some of the family members featured in the film, along with a representative from community cause PFLAG Vancouver.

My Dads, My Moms and Me

Julia Ivanova | 2019 | 85 mins

In her 2007 documentary Fatherhood Dreams, Julia Ivanova chronicled the touching and challenging journeys of four gay men who each made the decision to become parents after Canada legalized same-sex marriage. Married couple Randy and Drew adopted baby Jack. Scott connected with a surrogate to have twins Ella and Mac. Stephen decided to co-parent his daughters Jazz and Zea with lesbian couple Coreen and Wendy.

Fast forward twelve years — My Dads, My Moms and Me revisits the lives of these men and their children, now teenagers.

Incorporating clips from the original doc with contemporary interviews and scenes of daily lives, the film provides an intimate look at the obstacles and triumphs of these three queer families.

The cause

PFLAG Canada is a national charitable organization, founded by parents who wished to help themselves and their family members understand and accept their non-heterosexual children.  The “coming-out” process can be a critical time for families.  When the adjustment period is particularly long or painful, relationships can become permanently damaged, resulting in a lifetime of emotional scars.  People cannot always rise above the challenge of accepting themselves or their family member, and the results can be devastating, even fatal.  We support these families through today, and give them hope for a better tomorrow.

About Reel Causes

Reel Causes partners with filmmakers and Canadian causes dedicated to addressing global social justice issues. We host film screenings followed by a Q&A session to educate and inspire our community, and provide a forum for authentic conversation around the issues that affect us locally.
