Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) - Technological Change for Inclusion
Position role: The CRC appointment opportunity is intended for emerging scholars in Interactive Arts and Technology, at the rank of assistant or associate professor (or those who possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to these levels).
Employment Type: The Canada Research Chair is tenable for five years. The CRC appointment is renewable once, which is subject to the Chairholder demonstrating that they have achieved their objectives from their first term.

The School of Interactive Arts & Technology (SIAT) is a vibrant, multidisciplinary and internationally recognized school connecting Interactive Computing, Media, Design, People, and Science. SIAT's teaching and research draw upon fields ranging from design and interactive technology to cognitive science and media arts. SIAT offers degrees at bachelor' s, master's and doctoral levels. The School currently enrolls about 800 undergraduates and 110 PhD and Masters graduate students. SIAT's infrastructure includes state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities at Simon Fraser University's Surrey campus in the greater Vancouver area.
Simon Fraser University (SFU), located on unceded Coast Salish Territory, the traditional territories of the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw), Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), TsleilWaututh, Katzie, and Kwikwetlem peoples, is actively building a diverse, inclusive community and invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Technological Change for Inclusion at the School of Interactive Arts & Technology (SIAT) with an effective start date of May 1, 2022. This CRC appointment opportunity is intended for emerging scholars in Interactive Arts and Technology, at the rank of assistant or associate professor (or those who possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to these levels).
Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., the candidate must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 CRC assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process; please see the CRC website for eligibility details.
The successful applicant will be a scholar who will significantly enhance our research focus to enable the political, cultural, and social mobilization of information technologies and practices to reduce and redress harms, build networks of resilience among groups who experience marginalization, and/or otherwise examine how information and technology create opportunities that engender greater justice, equality, equity, and wellbeing.
The Assistant/Associate Professor will be expected to either work on technological change for inclusion or on the intersection of their research domain with markers of identity including but not limited to race, ethnicity, age, gender, sex, sexuality, ability, or other categories of difference that can and have been used to exclude, marginalize, privilege, or harm individuals or groups of people. Examples include but are not limited to racially-biased training data or algorithms, misleading digital representations and data visualizations, critical making practices, inaccessible user interfaces, dark design patterns, intersectional technology studies, exclusionary data schemas, selective data collection practices, unobtainable technologies for learning, inadequate Internet access in racialized, Indigenous, and rural communities, inscrutable face and image classifiers, or deep fakes.
We welcome applicants who engage in active collaboration among SIAT, SFU faculty, and other communities. Candidates are expected to make significant contributions to research, teaching, graduate student supervision and knowledge mobilization to diverse audiences. These could include the scholarly community, the general public, and other stakeholders as appropriate, including any of industry, governmental, non-governmental and not-for-profit organizations, hospitals and health authorities, advocacy groups, and creative communities.
This position is contingent upon the applicant receiving a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair. The position is subject to the availability of funding and to final approval by the University Board of Governors and the CRC Secretariat. The Canada Research Chair is tenable for five years. The CRC appointment is renewable once, which is subject to the Chairholder demonstrating that they have achieved their objectives from their first term. - an up-to-date, full curriculum vitae (include details of research and teaching, scholarly record, funding, and list of collaborations/partnerships);
- two examples of refereed published scholarly work;
- the proposed program of research (include an outline of the proposed CRC research program over five years, an explanation of how the proposed research aligns with and advances SFU’s 2016-2022 Strategic Research Plan, and a discussion of how this Chair would strengthen graduate training at SFU (2-6 pages single spaced);
- evidence of teaching effectiveness or potential;
- statement outlining your commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; and
- the names and email addresses of 4-5 referees (ranked in order of preference).
