IAT 102 is a 13-week long course that will introduce you to
fundamental design principles for graphic design, which is
also referred to as visual communication. Organized as a
continual interplay of theory and practice, we will examine
historical, philosophical, perceptual and semiotic approaches
to understanding and creating graphic design.
We will begin by exploring the nature of two-dimensional
design and composition, and will emphasize the history,
mechanics and technologies of graphic design. These
include graphic design elements and principles, color theory,
as well as type styles, spacing and legibility. Traditional print,
time-based and interactive forms of graphic design will be
compared and contrasted.
The hands-on coursework will centre on a series of
two-dimensional design assignments constructed first in
traditional media and progressing into the digital realm.
The studio assignments are designed to build on each other
and further supports the 3 larger projects. These projects
include Print Design: typography, composition and grid system;
Identity Design: branding - logo and packaging design; and
Interactive Design: information services and mobile devices.
