Biography

Dr. Geoffrey C. R. Schmalz received his PhD in Classical Art & Archaeology from the University of Michigan.  Before coming to SFU as an associate professor, limited term, Dr. Schmalz most recently taught Classics, Classical Archaeology, and Greek History at Michigan.  Although primarily a Hellenist he has also taught Roman Archaeology and History, as well as a broad range of ancient literatures.  As an archaeologist Dr. Schmalz has worked in Greece for nearly twenty years, beginning as a doctoral fellow of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens.  He has also excavated in Egypt, Jordan, and Tunisia.  Dr. Schmalz primarily specializes in the archaeology and history of ancient Athens, with a particular focus on that cultural history of the city’s Roman period, together with that of the Greek world in general under the early Empire.  His most recent publications include the article “Inscribing a Ritualized Past: The Attic Restoration Decree IG II2 1035 and Cultural Memory in Augustan Athens” and the monograph Augustan and Julio-Claudian Athens: A New Epigraphy and Prosopography (Brill).  Dr. Schmalz has now returned to the field and directs, in cooperation with the Greek Archaeological Service, the Pronnoi NW Necropolis project on Kefalonia, which forms the academic basis of SFU’s Semester Abroad Program in Greece that he also directs.
