Greece Study Tour, May 1-19, 2018

Immerse yourself in the culture, history, and beauty of the Mediterranean on a journey that will take you to Greece’s capital of Athens and the picturesque village of Molyvos on the Island of Lesvos. Join us on a tour through ancient sites and savour mouthwatering cuisine, as you feast your eyes on the colours of the Aegean and the vibrant blue Attic sky. Travel with SFU to the heart of ancient democracy in Athens, walk the steps of Pythia at the Oracle of Delphi, and explore the faith of the Byzantines at the medieval Monastery of Hosios Loukas. Sample Greek art from the Mycenaean Age to the street corner of the modern capital. Contemplate Asia from the crenellations of a medieval castle, walk through ancient olive groves, and sip Ouzo at the picturesque harbour of Molyvos on Lesvos, the Island of the poetess Sappho.

Come with us to read, think, and discuss the great works of art, literature, philosophy, and history that have shaped our ideas, all but a stone’s throw from monuments and stunning nature in both Athens and Molyvos. The 2018 Greece Study Tour, organized by SFU Continuing Studies and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies at SFU, will prepare you for journey with a series of pre-departure lectures in Vancouver on the history and culture of Greece by SFU faculty members. Once in Greece, you will lodge for nine days in Athens and another nine in the picturesque village of Molyvos on the island of Lesvos. In the capital of Greece the comfortable residences of the American College of Greece will be our base, while elegant townhomes at the very centre of the village will become our Molyvos home. Comfortably settled, we will have time for conversations, dinners, lectures and rest, but also for trips that will expose us to different facets of Greek life from ancient times to the Modern era.
