First Annual Edward and Emily McWhinney Memorial Lecture
On March 22nd, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies, in collaboration with SFU's School of Resource and Environmental Management and the Department of Archaeology, presented Dr. Michael Danti at the First Annual Edward and Emily McWhinney Memorial Lecture. Dr. Michael Danti, the Academic Director of the American Schools of Oriental Research Cultural Heritage Initiatives, an intiative funded in part by the US Department of State, presented a lecture entitled "A Momentary Erasure of Millenia: The Cultural Heritage Crisis in Syria and Iraq".
The event was opened by the Centre's Director, Dr. André Gerolymatos who welcomed the audience to the stately Segal Building in downtown Vancouver. Dr. Jane Pulkingham, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, also provided opening remarks, highlighting the important outreach work being done by the Centre before introducing Dr. Danti. His lecture provided an important overview of the devastation being wrought on humanity's cultural heritage.
The lecture was followed by a brief question and answer section before guests and a reception in Founders Hall.
