On June 14th, the American Hellenic Institute (AHI)’s documentary Cyprus Still Divided will be screened in Vancouver for the first time, followed by a roundtable discussion featuring local and international experts. The evening’s events are generously funded by the Hellenic Canadian Congress of BC, organized in cooperation with Hellenic Studies at SFU and are part of Vancouver’s annual Greek Heritage Festival.

“Newly-released information about U.S. policy toward Cyprus, such as the declassified State Department memorandum written by Secretary Kissinger, sheds new light on the 36-year-old issue and the public must be made aware”, says Executive Director Nick Larigakis. “The documentary accomplished this task by presenting the facts in a clear and concise manner.”

Cyprus Still Divided approaches the ongoing partition of the island from the perspective of Cold War geopolitics and American action, or more recently, inaction. In the film, archival material clarifies important aspects of the Cypriot drama, while bringing attention to the larger forces at play.

The film will commence at 6:30pm at the Hellenic Community Centre (4500 Arbutus Street). It will be followed by a roundtable discussion where SFU professors Andre Gerolymatos, Dimitri Krallis and John Harriss will be joined by Chris Ioannides of Queen’s College (City University of New York) to discuss the material presented in the film and engage with the problems of local and international politics at play in this ongoing Mediterranean dispute.

The event is free to the public and no registration is required.
