Lindsey A. Freeman

Biography

Lindsey A. Freeman, PhD in Sociology & Historical Studies. Freeman is the author of This Atom Bomb in Me (Redwood Press/Stanford University Press and Longing for the Bomb: Oak Ridge and Atomic Nostalgia (UNC Press). She is also co-editor of The Bohemian South: Creating Countercultures form Poe to Punk (UNC Press) and Silence, Screen, and Spectacle: Rethinking Social Memory in the Age of Information (Berghahn Books). 

Dr. Freeman is currently working on three research projects.

  • For the cosmos to bore us. An ethnography of rain and Vancouver.
  • The Tiny Uncanny. A collection of essays examining the social implications of artists working with themes of environmental disaster, atrocity, and social unease rendered in miniature forms.
  • The Very Touch of Endlessness: An ethnography of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

Professor Freeman is an Associate Member of the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University and an Affiliated Scholar, Associated Researcher with Espaces et Sociétés (ESO), Université de Caen, Normandie, France.

Research Interests

Art, atomic & nuclear cultures, colour, memory, poetics, weather, and experimental ethnography.
